SAN JOSE, Calif. – “UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson” takes place this evening at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and is headlined by six former world champions, including former Strikeforce and Pride multi-divisional champ Dan Henderson taking on former UFC light heavyweight champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in a 5-round non-title fight main event.

UFC 139 action kicks off tonight with the prelims streaming LIVE on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ufc) starting at 6 p.m. ET (3 p.m. PT), then moving to Spike TV at  8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) and then the Pay-Per-View main card begins at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m.).

Danny Castillo vs. Shamar Bailey

Round 1 – Welcome to the ProMMAnow.com play by play. Body kick from Castillo and he slips to the ground. He gets right up and puts Bailey on his back. Bailey scrambles to his feet. Castillo looking for a takedown, picks Bailey up high and slams him, repeat after Bailey got back up. Three takedowns by Castillo already in the first minute and a half. Castillo inside Shamar’s full guard; moves to half guard. Castillo tries to advance position, softens Bailey up with body shots. Bailey staying active on bottom but is taking some body shots. Castillo lands a couple shots to the face, another couple. He’s trying to move to side control but Bailey doing a good job with his guard. Big right hand from Castillo, hammerfists, body shots. Ref tells him to fight back. Castillo gets full mount. No wrestler wants to be here and Shamar uses a hip escape to get to half guard. Castillo postures up with more big shots and the referee stops it. Replay looks like the stoppage was a bit premature in my opinion. Why does Castillo remind me of a Jersey Shore guy? Rogan mentioned something about Bailey’s great wrestling and Castillo said, “It’s not better than mine.” Castillo then says he felt disrespected at the weigh-ins with Shamar missing weight and then saying he can’t lose any more weight.

Matt Brown vs. Seth Baczynski

Round 1 – Arena looks bare. Which is pretty normal at this point. Nice right from Baczynski on the jaw. They tie up, Baczynski pushes Brown to the cage. Knee from Brown, again. Nice right elbow from Baczynski. Another knee from Brown. Baczynski backs up throws a combo as Brown dodges and weaves. Baczynski re-clinches. They jockey for position. Nice elbow from Baczynski before he puts Brown on his back. He’s inside Brown’s full guard now. Closed guard. Brown sweeps and stands over Baczynski, he lets him up. Nice right from Brown. Misses a head kick, dodges a punch combo. Body shot from Brown. Baczynski shoots, pushes Brown to the cage, knee from Brown. Clinch game now. Thai plum from Brown, but can’t get anything off. Baczynski with a knee. Brown with a knee, again. Nice right from Baczynski, he catches Brown in a guillotine position. He lets it go and lands a couple punches before the bell. Round 2 – Leg kick from Brown. Baczynski throws some punches, Brown shoots under and gets caught in an arm in guillotine, Baczynski switches to a no-arm guillotine. Brown fights it as long as possible, he twists and turns, but it’s too tight and Brown finally has to tap. Brown is extremely disappointed. Baczynski moves to 2-0 in the UFC. None of his 15 career victories have gone to a decision (10 via submission / 5 via (T)KO).

Nick Pace vs. Miguel Torres

Round 1 – Big step up in competition here for Pace. Leg kick from Torres and he gets popped in the mouth. Two more leg kicks from Torres. Jab from Torres. Leg kick from Pace. Torres with a leg kick. Again. Jab from Torres. Leg kick. Jab and leg kick from Pace, misses an overhand right. Leg kick from Torres. Keeping his chin tucked. Leg kick from Torres. Left hook from Pace. Nice big right from Torres. Leg kick from Pace. Nice punch, kick combo from Torres. Leg kick from Pace. Big right from Torres. I like this version of Torres. Knee from Pace, again, he drops levels for a takedown, knee to the thigh. Torres defends the takedown so far. Torres softens him up with shots to the face, Pace being relentless. Torres locks on an arm in guillotine, lets it go. Knee from Torres as Pace continues looking for the takedown with less than a minute to go. Torres uses a kimura to drop down and sweep. Pace connects on the break as they stand. Torres lands a couple shots then a big right. Misses a big right but scores with a head kick although Pace partially blocks it. Round 2 – Toe to toe they square up. High kick, leg kick from Torres, leg kick. Again, on the inside. Outside, jab. One two from Torres. Front kick. He’s scoring nicely on Pace. And gets out of the way when Pace attacks. Big leg kick from Torres. Just misses taking Pace’s head off with a high kick. Pace ducks under a punch and puts Torres on his back. Torres attacks with elbows from his back. Ref warns him for hitting back of head. Elbows to the shoulder blade from Torres. Pace gets side control. Torres continues to stay busy. Torres gets to his knees and feet, pushes Pace to the cage. Knee to the thigh from Torres. They jockey, knee to the body and punches from Torres to the face. Still fighting in the clinch with one minute to go. Torres staying very busy. Pace’s pace is very slow. He’s holding on as Torres throws everything in the clinch. Knee to the face from Torres. Thai plum from Pace but Torres is the one scoring. PMN scores the round 10-9 Torres.

Round 3 – Torres comes out and takes the center quickly. Pace fighting defensively. He misses a jab. Covers up as Torres punches. Torres scores with a couple punches and dodges as Pace fires back. Inside leg kick and front kick from Torres. Knee from Pace. Leg kick from Torres. Jab. Nice footwork. Pace bleeding from the nose. Torres puts him against the cage. Nice punches to the face and body and knees and foot stomps and Pace is landing, and actually throwing nothing. Torres’ dirty boxing rate is incredible. Pace gets out of there and takes the center. Jab from Torres. Double jab. Pace misses a couple shots and Torres lands a one two. Knee from Pace, he pushes Torres to the cage, Torres reverses and goes back to the dirty boxing working Pace over. He’s looking very solid here. Right hand from Torres. Again. Side kick, rolling kick from Torres misses at the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Torres.

Gleison Tibau vs. Rafael dos Anjos

Round 1 – Tibau blocks a high kick. Dos Anjos with a leg kick, checked. Overhand right, blocked. Tibau gets caught with a nice left that rocks his head. Tibau looks huge. He’s walking down dos Anjos. Lands a counter right. Takedown by Tibau. Dos Anjos gets to a knee and then to his feet. They separate. Right hand and Tibau covers up. Big exchange with Tibau landing the counter right. Dos Anjos misses with a big uppercut, shoots and gets Tibau down but Tibau immediately gets up with the cage. Tibau shoots, stuffed, but clips dos Anjos with punches as he has him backing up. Dos Anjos shoots, stuffed. They wrestle against the cage until the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 Tibau.

Round 2 – Time is called to fix the tape on Tibau’s glove. Tibau goes for a leg but eats a right up side the head. Dos Anjos can’t find his range and neither can Tibau really. Tibau shoots from the outside and Tibau shrugs him off. Two BJJ black belts keeping it standing right here and most of the fight. Dos Anjos goes for the takedown with a single but Tibau defends well. Head kick from Dos Anjos blocked. Dos Anjos misses a big elbow. Tibau rocks dos Anjos with a couple punches, he hunts him down, backs him to the cage. Lands more big shots. Dos Anjos standing firm though, he’s wobbly, dos Anjos lands a nice right that halts the attack. Great resolve and way to hang in there by dos Anjos. He took some big shots. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Tibau.

Round 3 – Nice left from dos Anjos. Hard to believe these guys are lightweight. Dos Anjos misses with a big jumping knee. Right from dos Anjos. Leg kick from dos Anjos. Tibau shoots from the outside, stuffed. They exchange punches. Tibau catches a leg kick, lands a counter right. Right counter from Tibau. He shoots and puts dos Anjos on his back. Tibau works from inside the guard with under two minutes to go. Dos Anjos gets to his feet and they wrestle in the clinch with Tibau pressing dos Anjos to the cage. Dos Ajos reverses position. Knees to the thigh from Dos Anjos, grabs a single leg. Tibau shrugs dos Anjos off with 10 seconds left. Left hand from Tibau before the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Tibau.

Chris Weidman vs. Tom Lawlor

Round 1 – Lawlor walks to the cage to the music of Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” and he is dressed the part complete with a resistance band.  Touch of gloves. Lawlor connects first. Blocks a kick. Weidman grabs a leg and puts Lawlor on his back. Lawlor gets to his knees and tries to get up posting on one hand. Weidman scoops his legs out and takes top control, moves to side control. Lawlor scrambles but Weidman locks on a D’arce, pulls it tight, tells the ref he thinks he is out and the ref checks and yes, Tom Lawlor gets choked unconscious and he pulls Weidman off.

Michael McDonald vs. Alex Soto

Round 1 – Body kick from Soto. Right from McDonald. Leg kick from Soto. One two from Soto. Leg kick from Soto but McDonald counters with an overhand right that lands right on the button and Soto goes down. Soto was getting too wild.  Soto gets up but McDonald pours on the aggression trying to finish, he backs Soto to the cage, lets the punches fly landing solid uppercuts and a right to the chin and Soto goes down and out. The referee catches Soto against the cage before he falls completely to his back. Huge win for the 20-year-old McDonald.

Ryan Bader vs. Jason Brilz

Round 1 – Touch gloves. Left jab Bader. Misses a left hook. Brilz misses a one two. Misses an overhand right. Bader pushes him back, lands a solid uppercut that Brilz walks through. Bader clips Brilz with a big right and he goes down and out face first. Replay shows it was a glancing right hand on the back of the head, a place that will put out anyone and will make them forget what day it is.

Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kingsbury

Round 1 – Bonnar looks ready for business. Touch gloves. Leg kick inside by Kingsbury. Body kick Bonnar. Left by Kingsbury, another one. They clinch against the cage, knee from Kingsbury. Knees by both to the thighs. He backs Bonnar to the cage. Kingsbury backs out. Bonnar tags him on the chin that stuns Kingsbury. Bonnar lands a low blow and Kingsbury gets a brief break. Kingsbury scores in an exchange. Clinch, knees from both guys. Elbow from both. He backs Bonnar to the cage. Bonnar turns him around. Jockeying for position. Bonnar tries for a trip takedown, gets his back turned to Kingsbury. They scramble. Big knee to the body from Bonnar. Right to the chin. Kingsbury checks a couple kicks. Two big guys here, tall and strong. Bonnar backs him to the cage. Elbow from Kingsbury, he backs out and Bonnar chases him down, clinches, knees from Bonnar. He grabs a single and puts Kingsbury on his back. Bonnar in side control. Just under a minute to go. Bonnar gets full mount, postures up with punches, big shots from Bonnar as time runs out. PMN scores the round 10-9 Bonnar.

Round 2 – Inside leg kick from Kingsbury, and a right hand. Double jab from Bonnar. Kingsbury scores. They meet chins. Stephan catches a kick, turns Kingsbury around and has his back, gets a single and puts Kingsbury down. Bonnar on top in half guard. Bonnar seems to be fighting much smarter than we’ve seen in the past, utilizing his strengths. Bonnar has side control, softens him up, trying to set up a crucifix. Crazy Bob Cook in Kingsbury’s corner yelling instruction. Bonnar turns to North-South, back to side control, continues to use ground and pound. Bonnar looking for a crucifix on the other side now. A minute and a half left. He gets the crucifix briefly, still looking for it again. Bonnar looks to mount with a guillotine. Bonnar free of the guillotine and Bonnar in half guard but smothering Kingsbury. Looking for an arm triangle. Bonnar with a few punches before the bell. PMN scores it 10-9 Bonnar.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. They trade jabs. Bonnar catches a kick, drags Kingsbury down, he pops up but Bonnar drags him right back down. And we pick back up where we left off last round. Bonnar with half guard and  now side control, North-South, back to side control. The crowd boos at the smothering style. Here come some elbows from Bonnar. Tries the mounted crucifix, Kingsbury not falling for it. Bonnar drops some right hands to the melon. Bonnar with more punches, North-South, elbows to the body. Rogan said he would like to see Bonnar attempt to finish. I think he is trying. Kingsbury almost gets out the back door, Bonnar stops the escape. Bonnar looking for a kimura. Bonnar tries to land some punches before the bell. The crowd boos and Bonnar tells everyone he is sorry, shrugging his shoulders. Clearly not the most exciting fight we’ve seen Bonnar in but he completely dominated. Now there’s some cheers mixed with boos. Jon Fitch and the AKA guys console their boy Kingsbury.

Rick Story vs. Martin Kampmann

Round 1 – Kampmann catches Story with a couple right hands as Story comes in. They clinch up and Story lands a good shot that stuns Kampmann. Head kick from Kampmann mostly blocked. They square back up, right hook from Kampmann. Body shot from Story, right hook to the head. Big body head combo from Story. Beautiful. Again.Jab from Kampmann. Left to the chin and a high kick from Kampmann that gets blocked. Right hand from Story. One two from Kampmann. Right counter from Kampmann. Both guys are bleeding over their right eyes. Left from Story. One two from Story. Right from Story. Right from Kampmann and a knee. Right from Story, two rights from Kampmann. Beautiful right hook to the body from Story, he shoots but is stuffed. Clinch, Story shrugs him off. Body shot from Story. Nice jab from Kampmann, clinch, body shot from Story. Close round. PMN gives the edge to Kampmann 10-9. — Replay shows Kampmann eating an elbow that caused the cut. Story may have won that round, too close to call for me.

Round 2 – Nice exchange with Story landing a body shot. Right hand from Kampmann, again, has Story backing up. Another right on the chin from Kampmann. Right to the body from Story, right to the chin from Kampmann. Head kick blocked by Story, followed by a right to the chin from Kampmann. Two rights to the body from Story. Right from Kampmann. Right to the body again. Head kick blocked, thrown by Kampmann. Body shot again from Story. Kampmann shoots, puts Story on his back with a trip in the opposite direction. Kampmann in half guard, looking for an arm triangle. Story tries to reverse and explode out. Thirty seconds left in the round as Kampmann continues to try and free his leg from half guard to advance. PMN scores the round 10-9 Kampmann.

Round 3 – Left hand from Story, right from Kampmann. Right to the body from Story. They wrestle in the clinch, they separate, exchange punches, Kampmann drops levels looking for the double, pressing Story into the cage, he finally scoops him down. Story pops up but now Kampmann has a body lock from his back. Story gets free, they trade punches. Body shots from Story. Left and a right from Story His punches have lost some pop. Story gets a takedown but Kampmann gets right up. Kampmann lands a combo. Story’s punches have little power on them now. Kampmann with a body lock trying to get Story down with 2:00 left in the round. Kampmann has a body lock from behind. Suplex from Kampmann but Story pops right up. They jockey in the clinch. Hearing a few boos. Body shot from Story. He puts Kampmann down but immediately he pops up and Kampmann drags Story down. Story gives up his back, has both hooks in with 15 seconds left. Kampmann with a triangle body lock and this fight is over. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Kampmann (could go 29-28, but Kampmann wins no doubt).

Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles

The winner of this fight has been promised a title fight against 135 champ Dominick Cruz.  They have fought twice before and each have won one. However, Cruz won the last won via unanimous decision in July of this year.

Round 1 – Faber takes the center. Bowles misses with a one two. Bowles throws out a jab as he moves to the side. Uppercut from Faber, leg kick. Counter right from Bowles. Faber throws big as Bowles covers up. Left hook from Faber. Right hand from Bowles as Faber covers up. Left from Bowles. One two from Faber. Right hook from Faber, misses an uppercut. Bowles misses a combo. Throws two jabs, neither land. Body shot from Faber. Right hand and a nice combo from Faber. Body shot from Faber. Faber may have broke his hand already as he hit the side of Bowles head. He’s not acting like it’s hurt, but that is how you can hurt it when you wing shots like that. Faber shoots, picks Bowles up high for a big slam. Faber lands in a Bowles’ guillotine but he lets it go. Faber inside full guard working on the ground and pound. Faber postures up over Bowles. Up kick from Bowles as Faber dives in with a punch. PMN scores the round 10-9 Faber.

Round 2 – Touch gloves. Combo from Bowles, hits arms. A feint then a huge uppercut from Faber rocks Bowles badly. Faber attacks for the finish. Big knee to the body, several short punches. Huge elbow from Faber, takes side control.  Faber locks on a guillotine and Bowles taps out to one of the most dynamic finishes we have ever seen from anyone! His finishing sequence on Brian Bowles was a thing of vicious beauty. Man that was awesome. And I actually picked Bowles. Faber is back! The crowd goes nuts at the victory. — I must say, after he had Bowles hurt and doubled over, Faber through an elbow that looked like it would have chopped through a cinder block.

Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le

Round 1 – Side kick from Cung. Silva backing up. Le attacks with punches. Silva tentative. Silva counters with a right and Le gets rocked a little. Silva playing the counter game. Spinning backfist wobbles Silva. Spinning heel kick is blocked. Le ducks a big right. Spinning backfist drops Silva. Spinning wheel kick lands up side the head. He misses the next one and eats a counter punch. They meet shins. Side kick to the body. Silva actually looks scared or something. No, I think it’s just a pure counter game he’s playing. Body kick from Cung.  Wheel kick scores for Le. Cung is bleeding over his eye. Wandy eats a big right as he comes in. Side kick from Le. High kick spinning backfist from Le. Inside leg kick and head kick from Silva. Right from Le. Side kick. Big right from Silva. Silva attacks and stuns Le. Le with a side kick The crowd jumps to their feet with cheers as the bell sounds. This style matchup is freaking awesome. PMN scores it 10-9 for Le.

Round 2 – The crowd loves it. Le ducks a shot and Silva trips to the ground. They square up. Side kick from Le. Le misses a spinning kick. Big right from Le. Body kick. Axe kick. Right from Le. Leg kick Silva. Body kick Le. Body kick from Le. Wheel kick blocked. Spinning backfist from Le. Le has slowed a bit. Le with a right, side kick. To the thigh. Leg kick from both guys. Right from Silva. Side kick from Le. Leg kick. Silva hurts Le. He grabs a front head lock and lands some big knees. Le is hurt. Left to the chin, a knee to the chin from Wanderlei. Rogan says he disagrees with the stoppage but I don’t think Le is complaining.  Silva had Le’s head and landed several knees, Le went down and Silva finished him off dropping shots to the head. That was a fun fight. The replay does show maybe it was stopped a little early but I doubt Cung would have come back. Rematch!

Round 1 – “USA” chants as the fighters touch gloves. Here we go. Leg kick Shogun. Hendo ducks a right. Hendo hurts Shogun with an uppercut. Shogun goes for a takedown. Hendo goes for a front choke. Shogun pulls out and Hendo fires off a combo of pain. Shogun is bloody but okay. Hendo hurts Shogun with a punch as he shoots. They tie up and Hendo throws him to the ground and walks away. Shogun gets up. “USA” chants begin. Knee from Shogun to the body. Shogun covers up as Hendo throws a left right. Leg kick Shogun. Shogun shoots, elbow from the clinch as he backs out. Big right from Dan misses. Leg kick from Dan. We got us a fight fellas. Hendo shoots and has a single as Shogun gives rabbit punches. Hendo stands up lands a right. Uppercut just misses for Shogun, head kick. Right from Dan. A slapping left. They tie up. Knee from Hendo, again. I can’t imagine Shogun wanting to tie up here. Wow!!! PMN scores it 10-9 Hendo.

Round 2 – Man my adrenaline is rushing, I can’t even imagine what they must be feeling. Jab from Shogun. He misses a leg kick. Jab Hendo. Hendo ties up, knee to the body. Shogun pushes him to the cage. Exchange knees. Shogun with a knee to the thigh. Left right from Hendo. Shogun covers up and takes one to the body. He has great defense over his face when he’s in trouble. Jab from Hendo. One two from Shogun. Left from Hendo. Shogun plows forward with one two one two. They clinch. Big body shot, again from Hendo, you could hear the thud. Underhooks from Hendo pressing against the cage. Knee from Shogun. They are pacing themselves. A few boos are starting. Ref calls for work. Ref separates them. Shogun’s face is bloody. Jabs from both. Right from Shogun scores. PMN scores the round 10-9 Hendo. — Replay shows Shogun took some heavy shots.

Round 3 – Ref said “last round” Dan said “nope, three more”. They both miss uppercuts. Shogun wobbles Hendo with a right. Big body kick from Shogun. They tie up. Hendo gets a trip takedown but lets Shogun get up. Jab on the chin from Shogun. Leg kick and a big right drops Shogun. Hendo goes for the finish. Shogun covers up to save his face. Shogun sweeps and attacks the leg. Hendo trying to get free. He is out and up, Shogun is up and they are holding each other against the cage. Shogun’s face is a bloody mess. Ref calls for action. Shogun took some massive shots there. Elbow from Hendo another to the side of the head as he tried to drop levels. Shogun presses him to the cage. Ref warns Shogun for holding the cage. So glad this is five rounds. Shogun gets Dan down and lands some punches. He holds Hendo around the body, punches Hendo in the face. To the body with 20 seconds left. Shogun lands a right. They are both tired at this point as the bell sounds. They slowly walk back to their corner, well Dan struts the way he does back. PMN scores it 10-9 for Hendo.

Round 4 – Warriors! Shogun’s left eye is swollen. He looks pretty fresh though. He shoots and puts Hendo down. He getts right up. Shogun goes for it again. Dan gets a crucifix, mounts and back up. Fight of the year right here. Dan shoots and puts Shogun down. Now this would have been a great FOX fight. Well, maybe a little too brutal but they need to be exposed to what this sport is really about. Hendo on top now in half guard. Now in full guard. Right hand from Hendo, he stands over Shogun and dives in with a big punch. Shogun gets up, falls, stands. They square up. Uppercut from Shogun. Jab from both guys. Both guys are pacing themselves. Huge uppercut from Shogun rocks Dan, he shoots. Shogun hurts him with a punch. Jab from Shogun, again. Dan can barely throw a punch. This is the guy who does not run to work out. Shogun puts him on his back and gets full mount. Hendo gives up his back. Shogun goes for the choke and Hendo spins and ends up in full guard until time runs out. Goldy said we may be watching the best fight in UFC history and I agree. This is Bonnar-Griffin on steroids.  Shogun 10-9 as I saw that round.

Round 5 – Dan’s corner told him not to exchange, but clinch. Shogun looks fresher. He gets the takedown after tying up. Shogun has side control, knee to the body. Another knee – 29 year old against 40 year old. Shogun gets full mount. Lands some punches. Hendo covers up has his feet on the cage. Hendo holds on to Shogun. Shogun postures up with punches. Hendo grabs his neck and gets Shogun in half guard. Shogun gets mount again. He postures up. Hendo gives up his back, nope, back to mount for Shogun. Shogun working him over with rabbit punches, he postures up with a big shot. Dan is getting dominated now. Shogun lands three shots to the back of the head. Back in full mount. Elbows and punches from Shogun still in full mount with one minute to go. More punches from Shogun. Hendo gets Shogun’s leg in half guard, still on bottom. Shogun gets back to full mount and keeps throwing punches, he postures up, they scramble, mount again at the bell. We just saw 25 minutes of pure blood guts and glory my friends. I have never seen anything like that. And I don’t know who won. Let’s count it up. This is when Pride rules should come in because in a “real” fight, Shogun would be the winner because he finished strongest and Dan was basically incapacitated. Anyway,  PMN scores this round 10-8 for Shogun. PMN actually scored the fight a draw 47-47. Hendo probably should have won one of those first rounds 10-8 now that I think back, but at the time I think I was so hyped I forgot to give him a 10-8… but there you have it…and why I’m not a judge. But — how about a rematch!

“That guy can take an effin punch,” says Hendo. Dan said he though he had won all three rounds going into the 4th and one round he felt he had 10-8. Makes sense. — Shogun gets a ton of applause too. Rogan says afterward it was probably the most amazing fight they have ever called.
