BIRMINGHAM, England – “UFC 138: Leben vs. Muñoz” takes place today at LG Arena in Birmingham, England and is headlined with a middleweight match-up between the heavy-handed Chris Leben and top-five ranked former two-time All-American Mark Munoz. The two will compete in the UFC’s first-ever five round non-title fight main event.

ProMMAnow.com (www.prommanow.com) will provide LIVE results and play-by-play commentary of the preliminary card starting at 1:40 p.m. ET (10:40 p.m. PT). The main card will broadcast in the U.S. via tape delay on Spike TV at 8 p.m. ET/PT. UFC 138 play-by-play:

Chris Cariaso vs. Vaughan Lee

Round 1 – Lee starts out moving quick misses a head-kick but keeps pushing forward. Cariaso ties up with Lee and they are against the cage. Lee looked to have a deep standing choke in but lets go. They go to the ground and Lee is on top. Lee is definitely controlling Cariaso on the ground. Cariaso uses the cage to get the fight back to standing. Lee takes Cariaso back to the ground and is on top. And the feed is cut to a “We are experiencing technical difficulties” screen. We’re back and the fight is back and both men are back on their feet. Vaughan definitely wants to keep the fight on the ground as he pushes Cariaso back agains the cage in the clinch. End of the first. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Vaughan Lee.

Round 2 – Cariaso starts with a nice combination and it is followed by multiple missed head-kicks from Vaughan. The crowed gets loud again as Vaughan pushes Cariaso against the cage and back into the clinch. Cariaso lands an elbow with stops Lee and the two tie up. Cariaso gets the takedown and is now on top of Lee on the ground. Cariaso is looking to pass Lee’s guard and now has full mount after battling for a minute. Lee escapes the full mount but Cariaso is still in control. Lee tries briefly for a triangle but couldn’t get it. Cariaso looked better in that round. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Cariaso.

Round 3 – Cariaso starts off strong and Lee tries for the head-kick again but misses. The two clinch and then are separated by the ref. Lee defends a takedown attempt and the two are working in the clinch agains the cage. Lee tries for a single leg takedown. He’s working hard, but doesn’t get it. Both men are working hard knowing that the winner of this round will likely win the fight. Cariaso gets the takedown and is on top of Lee and gets side control. Now Cariaso has Lee’s back. Cariaso tries for an arm triangle but doesn’t get it. Nasty elbows from Cariaso as the feed goes down again. The round ends with Cariaso on Lee’s back looking for the choke. Chris Cope vs. Che Mills

Round 1 – Mills has a nice leg kick and then drops Cope with a hard knee to the face. The ref almost stops the fight, but gives Cope a chance to get back to his feet. Cope is trying to recover and get back to his feet but Mills keeps punching him and Cope is dropped again and the ref stops the fight.

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Jason Young

Round 1 – Young starts off with some quick jabs and counter strikes. Young gets a hard leg kick in to Omigawa’s side. Another hard leg kick from Young to Omigawa’s leg this time. Omigawa tries for a single leg takedown but it doesn’t work. Now the two move into the cinch with Young’s back against the cage. Omigawa gets the takedown and now is on top of Young. Young is now sitting up and trying to use the cage to bet back to his feet. It works and Young is now using some knees to Omigawa’s body. They are now apart and a kick from Young nocks Omigawa down briefly and now both men are back in the clinch agains the cage. Young has some nice combinations and takes Omigawa down but almost gets trapped in a guillotine but the round ends. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Young.

Round 2 – Omigawa gets the takedown as Young’s eye is swelling up from a head-butt in the first round. After wroking on the ground for a minute Young is able to roll over Omigawa and get back to his feet. Now both men are back in the clinch and Omigawa is able to get the takedown again. Omigawa has full mount briefly as the two continue to battle for position. Omigawa is not really attempting any submissions, but he is controlling the fight. The round ends and ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Omigawa.

Round 3 – Both men come out swinging. Omigawa connects and stumbles Young, and then Young counters. Both men connect some more before the two clinch and Omigawa gets the takedown. On the ground Omigawa attempts a heelhook, but it only lasts briefly before btoh men stand back up. Young hits a hard leg kick and then connects with a right. Omigawa takes Young down again and tries for a guillotine. Young gets out and Omigawa now has Young’s back. Young is trying to use the cage to get back to his feet but is unsuccessful. Omigawa’s control on the ground could win him this fight. The round ends as Young gets on top of Omigawa and starts throwing punches, but it might just be too little too late. Rob Broughton vs. Philip De Fries

Round 1 – Broughton begins the fight pushing forward and De Fries shoots for a takedown. Both men are in the clinch with Broughton’s back pushed against the cage. The ref separates the two and they are back in the center of the octagon. De Fries tries again for the takedown and he isn’t having an success as both men are against the cage again. De Fries gets hold of Broughton’s anke and takes him down very quickly. De Fries is now on top, but Broughton is on his hands and knees working his way back up. He is only there for a short time before De Fries was able to get Broughton on his back again. As Broughton tries to get back on his feet De Fries is able to move around to his back and drag Broughton back to the ground as the round ends. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for De Fries.

Round 2 – As the round starts De Fries gets the clinch, pushes Broughton against the cage, and then gets the takedown. De Fries goes for Broughton’s back before getting side control. De Fries has Broughton’s back again and starts landing some strikes to Broughton’s face. After some movement, the two are briefly back on their feet before going back to the ground. Broughton is now in control and on top of De Fries. Broughton has a mounted crucifix on De Fries. De Fries is in trouble with 30 seconds left in the round. Broughton is doing much more damage from this position than De Fries has been able to do. Round 3 – The round start with De Fries throwing punches and then pushing Broughton against the cage as the two wrap up. De Fries takes Broughton down. Broughton gives up his back after a failed attempt to stand up. Now De Fries has side control again. De Fries again gets Broughton’s back briefly before getting full mount. De Fries lands some hard shots to Broughton’s face before Broughton is able to use the cage to chance positions to avoid any more shots. The ref stands the two back up with 10 seconds left and the round ends before any one of them can land anything. John Maguire vs. Justin Edwards

Round 1 – As the fight starts Edwards throws a kick and then catches Maguire with a low kick to the groin. The ref warns Edwards that another low kick will result in a point deduction. As the fight resumes Edwards comes out swinging. He hits Maguire with spinning back kick and then a right that drops Maguire. Edwards swarms but Maguire survies. Edwards goes for a choke but Maguire slams him and now is on top of Edwards. Edwards is able to use the cage to get back to his feet as Maguire still has double under-hooks. Maguire is able to use those to take Edwards back to the ground and is in half guard. Edwards gets back to his feet but Maguire got in some knees to the head and body before both men are back against the cage. Now Maguire has Edwards back. The two grapple continue to grapple as the crowd is yelling for Maguire to throw knees. Maguire throws one before dropping Edwards back to the ground. The round ends in amazing fashion as Maguire was able to battle back and control so much of the round despite getting knocked down early. Round 2 – The round starts with an inside leg kick by Maguire before Edwards pushes him against he cage. Now both men are back apart and Edwards lands a kick to the body. Both men are throwing combinations back and forth and Maguire lands another inside leg kick. Maguire has double under-hooks again and throws Edwards to the ground. Maguire has Edwards back and has a body triangle on Edwards. Both men exchange shots to their opponents head before going back to battling for position. It looked like Maguire was about to get a rear naked choke on Edwards but Edwards was able to defend it. The round ends as Maguire attemps an armbar. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Maguire.

Round 3 – The round begins with Maguire landing a quick jab. Edwards is using everything he has in his punches before missing a spinning back kick. Maguire takes Edwards down and after a brief submission attempt, Edwards lets Maguire back up. In the clinch again Maguire lands some nasty knees to Edwards face. Both men go to the ground and after a mistake Edwards gives up control and now Maguire is on top. Maguire has full mount before taking Edward’s back. Edwards is able to get free with 30 seconds left in the round and take control briefly before Maguire regains control. Terry Etim vs. Eddie Faaloloto

Round 1 – Leg kick from Etim and a couple of counter lefts, a spinning back kick, Faaloloto shoots and Etim jumps into a guillotine. They go to the ground and Faaloloto taps out.  Very quick.

Cyrille Diabate vs. Antony Perosh

Round 1 – Diabate stalking, front kick. Feinting with a knee to stop the shot. Right hand from The Snake. Body kick with the left leg. One two punch. Perosh shoots but Diabate pushes him back. Perosh throws a one two and shoots from the outside but Diabate just pushes him back. Body kick from Diabate followed by a left that scores. Boos from the crowd. Left from Diabate. Perosh shoots, Diabate sprawls. Diabate stalking, lands a couple of nice shots. Perosh tries pulling guard, ends up on his back eating punches. Perosh pushes him off and gets up, eats a body kick, again. He shoots and gets Diabate on his back. Side mount. Diabate gets half guard. Less than a minute to go. Elbow from Perosh. He lands a right as Diabate hangs on. Perosh postures up with punches but gets caught back in half guard. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 Diabate.

Round 2 – Diabate coming forward, knee to the body. Perosh shoots, stuffed. Lands a left but Perosh puts him on his back. He attempts to get to side control but Diabate defending well, lands an upkick. Perosh gets full mount. Diabate gives up his back and Perosh locks on the choke, Diabate escapes momentarily but he’s back flat on his back and is fully mounted. Moves to north-south. Back to full mount, he locks in an arm triangle. He moves to the side, then back to mount as he lets go the choke. Diabate gives up his back and is eating big punches. Perosh goes for the rear-naked choke and this fight is over as The Snake taps out. Wow! Perosh’s second straight win at 205 in the UFC.

Thiago Alves vs. Papy Abedi

Round 1 – Abedi crawls toward Alves. Body kick from Alves after blocking some punches. Misses a high kick. Nice left from Abedi as Alves covers up. Leg kick from Alves. Again. Front kick from Abedi, he backs Alves to the cage. Lands an elbow. He leans on Alves against the cage. Knee to the body. Again. Knee from Alves, he pushes Abedi off. Left right, leg kick from Abedi. Big body kick from Alves. Alves has a lump on his forehead. High kick from Alves, blocked, leg kick. Abedi checks a leg kick. Jab from Abedi, a nice left and then an elbow. Alves ducks a big big punch that would have took his head off. Right hand from Alves and Abedi is rocked badly, he stumbles to the ground as Alves gets full mount and unleashes a horror movie upon him. He assaults him like an axe murderer. A right left right put Abedi down first, Alves then smashed him with elbows, cutting him open until Abedi gave up his back and Alves choked him out. It was Abedi’s UFC debut and the first loss of his career. It was also Alves’ first submission victory in the UFC (his only other submission win in his career came via punches, against Jason Chambers, but it was not in the UFC).

Brad Pickett vs. Renan Barao

Round 1 – Pickett walks to the cage reading a newspaper, wearing suspenders, jeans, a cap, with some old swing type music playing. Pretty cool. Touch gloves. Leg kick Barao, body kick. They swing big and Barao lands a left right. He lands another left and a right. Throws a spinning back kick. Big leg kick from Barao. They stand and trade big punches with both guys landing solid shots. Barao misses a running knee. Body kick from Barao. The crowd cheers “Pickett”. Lead left hook from Pickett. Barao shoots, stuffed.Nice left from Barao. Nice front kick from Barao, left jab solid, again. Inside leg kick. Nice right from Pickett but gets countered. Inside leg kick from Barao. One two from Pickett. Body shot from Barao, inside leg kick. Right hand on the end of a combo scores for Barao. Nice knee from Barao followed by a flurry of punches put Pickett down. He jumps on his back and is looking for the choke with just over a minute to go. The arm is over Pickett’s chin though, not under the chin. He pulls it tight–palm to palm and Pickett taps out. Barao is a BEAST. Beautiful performance from Renan Barao.

Chris Leben vs. Mark Munoz

Round 1 – This event sure went by fast thus far. Leben with dyed red hair. Inside leg kick from Munoz. He ducks a hook and puts Leben on his back. Leben has a guillotine but Munoz pops his head out and is on top in half guard. Leben lands a hammerfist off his back. Leben attacks with an elbow off his back and he makes it to his feet using the cage but pays for it. Body shots from Munoz as he drops levels for a single. Leben with rabbit punches and stops the takedown. Leben puts Munoz down, grabs a body lock as Munoz stands up. Leben with big right hands as he backs Munoz to the cage. Body shot from Munoz. Munoz backs out to the center, Leben coming forward, leg kick, punch, clinch. Body shot and foot stomp from Leben, he catches a leg from a knee and dumps Munoz. He gets up and Leben drops into a guillotine but Munoz escapes with his head and is on top now in half guard. Leben attacks off his back. Two huge right hands from Munoz from the top. Leben gets up but eats two enormous shots that would have KO’d most people. Leben comes forward in full zombie mode. They exchange and Munoz shoots, stuffed and eats some shots as the round ends. We’ve got a fight on our hands people! Close round too. Munoz gets it 10-9.

Round 2 – Leben misses an uppercut. Leben throws a combo, they tie up and Munoz backs him to the cage. Munoz looking for the takedown and gets Leben on his back. Big body shots from inside full guard as Leben attacks off his back with elbows and hammerfists. Big right hands from Munoz and Leben gets to his feet. He ate some big shots. Leben in zombie mode, throws a knee. They tie up and Munoz puts him back down. Leben’s face is bloody. Munoz on top in half guard, lands a right. Leben gets to his knee trying to get up. Eats some big right hands as Munoz tries to keep him down. Leben goes for a D’arce, it’s very tight as Leben’s face is completely blood covered, all in his eyes. The ref stops the fight to have the doctor check him out. Leben tells them if he says he can’t see they wills top the fight. Leben said he could see. Leben comes forward with punches, Munoz shoots. Leben was taking some deep breaths during the break. Munoz puts him back down and is on top. Lands some big rights as Leben tries to get up. Leben breathing very hard. Munoz in full mount with Leben’s back to the cage. Ten seconds left. Body shots from Leben. What a fight guys. 10-9 Munoz.

Round 3 – Leben is telling his corner he can’t see and they stop the fight. The crowd erupts in boos. In my humble opinion I think he can see. I think he’s just too tired to continue. He looks like he can see to me…that’s just my opinion. An anti-climactic finish to what was a great fight. I’m telling you right now he can see. After the fight you can tell his eye is not swollen or anything and he’s looking up at the big screen. Leben quit is what happened.

Munoz calls out Anderson Silva and wants a title shot. Leben said afterward, “Kind of hard to fight when you’re choking on blood.” He said nothing about his eye and looks to be completely fine. What a bunch of crap.

  1. I really can’t believe what I just saw. I can’t believe I just saw Chris Leben quit onhis stool. There was nothing wrong with him except he was tired and not ready for a five round fight. Complete bullshit.
