Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone

According to several media reports, the UFC is working towards a lightweight match up between Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz. The contest will be part of UFC 141, which takes place Dec. 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

After losing three times with the WEC lightweight title on the line, it appeared as if Cerrone may never wear the belt in a Zuffa promotion. However, since moving to the UFC, “Cowboy” is 4-0 with stoppage victories over Paul Kelly, Charles Oliveira and Dennis Siver. He also holds victories over Anthony Njokuani, Danny Castillo and Rob McCullough.

For his last fight, Diaz dropped back down to the lightweight division and starched former Pride FC champion Takanori Gomi at UFC 135. The victory snapped a two-fight losing streak in the welterweight division for Diaz. The TUF 5 champion has also defeated Marcus Davis, Melvin Guillard and Josh Neer.

UFC 141’s headliner will feature a showdown between former heavyweight champions. Former UFC champion Brock Lesnar returns to action against former Strikeforce and Dream champion Alistair Overeem.
