USA Today has reported that media giant Viacom, the parent company of MTV Networks, has purchased a majority stake in Bellator Fighting Championships. The promotion has been airing on MTV2 and is expected to move to Spike TV in 2013.

According to the report, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney will remain is charge of running the day-to-day operations of the budding promotion.

Spike TV’s arrangement with the UFC ends in December, but the channel holds the rights to the promotion’s video library through 2012, which is why Bellator will remain on MTV2 until 2013.

Bellator was founded in 2008. The promotion’s first season began in 2009 and aired on ESPN Deportes. For their next season, they moved to Fox Sports Net, and now finally to MTV2.
