“Tachi Palace Fights 9: Contenders” takes place this evening at Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif. Headlining the card is a flyweight (125 lbs.) bout between top-ranked Ian McCall (9-2) and Dustin Ortiz (7-0) of Nashville MMA.

Jorge Lopez vs. Waachiim Spiritwolf

Round 1 – Wolf comes forward, pushes Lopez into the cage, looking for a single. Wolf leaning into Lopez, fighting hard for the takedown. Knees from Wolf to the thighs. Lopez with an elbow to the side of Wolf’s head, more elbows as Wolf continues to attack the legs for the takedown. Lopez grabs a tie clinch and lands a huge knee to the head of Spiritwolf that wobbles him like a drunk man. Lopez backs up though and seems to let him off the hook. Wolf seems to have regained his composure by this point. He swings and goes for the takedown. Lopez grabs the collar tie and lands another huge knee to the face. They square up again. Lopez is a training partner of Wanderlei Silva. Big leg kick from Lopez. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Lopez.

Round 2 – Wolf rushes in swinging and gets tagged. Spiritwolf being more tentative than normal. They clinch, Wolf pushes him against the cage, looking for a single leg. Knees to the thighs as he lets go of the single. Drops down for the double but Lopez defends. Wolf lets it go and puts some knees to the thighs. Wolf drops levels again, fighting hard for the takedown being relentless. Ref calls for work. Lopez puts some elbows to the side of Spiritwolf’s head. Lopez uses a kimura to get Wolf off him. Lopez lands a head kick that rocked Wolf, he breathes deeply and shoots with less than a minute to go in the round. Knees to the thigh from Wolf. Round 3 – Left hand from Wolf glances off Lopez. Left from Wolf and shoots in for the takedown, pressing Lopez against the cage. Wolf grabs a single but Lopez fights him off. Lopez with several elbows to the relentless Spiritwolf. Knees to the thighs from Wolf. Lopez tries to use a kimura to sweep Wolf. Elbow from Wolf but gets caught with a big right that stuns Wolf, he shoots and slams Spiritwolf, now on top in half guard. One minute to go. Lopez with a leg trapped in half guard, trying to get it free. He lands several short right hands. Body shots from Lopez, hammerfists as the fight ends. Kevin Dunsmoor vs. Mamoru Yamaguchi

Round 1 – Short notice bout for Dunsmoor. Left hand from Dunsmoor. Leg kick from Yamaguchi. Body lock from behind by Dunsmoor. Yamaguchi turns front. Yamaguchi has an awesome 70’s style afro. Foot stomps from Dunsmoor as they wrestle standing. More foot stomps from Dunsmoor., putting Yamaguchi against the cage. Knees from Dunsmoor, he drops levels for the shot and puts Yamaguchi down, takes his back while standing, with only one hook in Dunsmoor stands up and goes back to ta standing clinch using knees. Dunsmoor grabs a single. Yamaguchi gets free and tries to make him pay with punches. Dunsmoor ties him up again and presses him against the cage. Knee to the gut from Dunsmoor. Dunsmoor has a body lock and they wrestle until the bell. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Dunsmoor.

Round 2 – Yamaguchi connects with a couple punches. Dunsmoor ties him up. Big elbow from Yamaguchi. Dunsmoor clinches and they wrestle back and forth, he drops levels for a single. Yamaguchi with a big knee to the gut, Dunsmoor swings then goes back for the single. Yamaguchi defends, lands a knee to the body. Dunsmoor gets Yamaguchi to the ground but not long as Yamaguchi stands right back up but Dunsmoor stays connected to him like stink on poop, as he has for the entire round. Dunsmoor’s strategy is clearly this type of clinch Greco game it seems. Ref separates them thank goodness. Yamaguchi with a body kick, a right, then a left hand crumples Dunsmoor and this fight is over. Yamaguchi had enough of the hug-fest.

Anthony Ruiz vs. Gerald Harris

Round 1 – Harris and Ruiz in a low wrestling style stance, they clinch briefly, back out. Leg kick from Ruis. Harris misses a big punch. Ruiz shoots puts Harris against the cage. Kidney shot from Harris before he backs out and they take the center. Right hand from Harris just misses. Right jab from Ruiz. Low stance from both. Nice uppercut from Ruiz as Harris leans in. He tries it again as Harris shoots. Stuffed. Left overhand punch from Harris. Nice right uppercut from Ruiz. Harris grabs a tie clinch, lands an uppercut as he backs out and Ruis misses a huge punch. Clinch, knee from Harris. Body shots from both, knees from both. They square up. Harris shoots, gets a single, pushes him against the cage. Less than a minute to go. Harris goes for the slam but Ruiz lands on his feet. Harris picked him up over his head and that allowed Ruiz to get his feet under him. Harris continues to go for the takedown. Round 2 – Low stances again. Both swing and miss. Front kick from Ruiz is blocked. Harris shoots, stuffed. He puts Harris against the cage and puts knees in his thighs. He backs out and they square up. Left hand from harris. Harris with a right and Ruiz misses. Another shot from Harris connects, and another left. He shoots for the ankle and gets Ruiz down. Ruiz gets to his knees and stands. Big knee from Harris as he drops levels for the takedown, pressing Ruiz against the cage. Big knee from Harris as he backs out. Head kick from Ruiz catching Harris as he was leaning over. Harris shoots, stuffed, pushes Harris against the cage. Harris reverses position, drops levels. Ruiz with elbows to the side of the head as the round ends. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Harris.

Round 3 – Left hand from Harris. Harris with another left. Ruiz shoots, eats a knee, pushes Harris to the fence. Knees from Ruiz.  Harris reverses position, lands a knee and pushes Ruiz into the fence, two more good knees as he backs out. Left jab from Harris. Left hook. Head kick from Ruiz barely misses as Harris had his hands low. Harris got the takedown very briefly as Ruiz bounces right back up. Harris working for the double, single and picks Ruiz over his head for the slam. Ruiz gets back up though and Harris stays on him pushing him against the fence. Harris drops for the double, lets it go, big elbow as he backs out. Left hook from Harris and catches Ruiz with a knee as he shoots in. Harris turns him around and pushes him into the cage. Knee from a tie clinch from Harris, he shoots, stuffed and Harris lands a knee to the head. He shoots again, stuffed. Ruiz works over the body with punches as Harris is on his knees still looking for the takedown. He gets Ruiz down, puts a big knee to his gut that knocks Ruiz over and Harris pounds away until the bell. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Harris. Harris has looked much more aggressive this fight than his last few.

Efrain Escudero vs. Fabricio Camoes

Round 1 – Camoes ties up. They back out. Leg kick from Camoes. Tie up again. Camoes pushes Escudero against the cage following a jumping knee attempt. Escudero reverses position and Camoes reverses again then backs out. One two, leg kick from Efrain. Big leg kick from Efrain. Camoes takes him with a left, right left. Big left hook from Camoes. Big leg kick from Camoes. Another one. Push kick from Camoes. Escudero eats a knee to the body, he shoots. Elbows to this head from Camoes. Escudero backs out. Efrain misses with a one two, lands a left as Camoes fires back and lands a big left. Escudero picks him up for a slam. But Camoes gets to a knee trying to get right up. Escudero stays on him, drags him back down but ends up on bottom. Good round. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Camoes. Escudero was counter-punching too much in round one according to Phil Baroni.

Round 2 – Body kick from Camoes, spinning  back kick misses. Two nice left hands from Camoes stuns Escudero. Right hand from Efrain after eating a big leg kick. Nice left hook, leg kick from Escudero. Camoes misses with a left hook and Escudero drops under him, picks up a single in the air but Camoes defends it. Camoes picks Efrain up and puts him down, on top in half guard. Camoes using little elbows from top, body shots. Dean Lister is in Camoes corner calling out direction. Camoes with nice body shots, he stands up and lands a big hammerfist. Escudero gets up and lands a nice punch. Leg kick, shoots for a takedown. Escudero tries to drop and roll Camoes and Camoes ends up in full mount. Escudero gives up his back with 45 seconds left in the round. Camoes softens him up with several punches, he stands and lets Efrain up. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Camoes.

Round 3 – Camoes is a good fighter and I’d like to see him in the UFC before Efrain to be honest. Nice left jab from Camoes. Efrain shoots, huge takedown. Camoes gets right up, eats a knee. Camoes gets a body lock looking for the trip. Knee from Efrain and Camoes grabs it. Elbow from Efrain but Camoes turns the corner and puts him down. Efrain gets to the fence and wall walks up. Camoes pushing him against the cage. Efrain with elbows to the side of the head but Camoes puts him on his back. Elbows from his back from Efrain. Efrain trying to make something happen. Less than two minutes to go. Efrain inside full guard. Ref stands them up. Leg kick from Efrain, he shoots, stuffed. Flying knee from Efrain drops Camoes. Camoes gets up and drags Efrain down. They scramble and Efrain gets top position. Elbows from the top from Efrain. He tries to lock in a guillotine but time runs out. Efrain should have been fighting like that much earlier but at least he went for it. He came close to knocking out Camoes and he took the round but Camoes should have the fight. Isaac Dejesus vs. Russ Miura

Round 1 – Right hand from Miura. Leg kick from Miura as he pushes Dejesus against the cage. They clinch, Miura tosses Dejesus to the mat and gets on top in half guard.  Miura passes to side control. Dejesus sweeps as Miura looks for an armbar. Dejesus picks him up and frees himself. Miura on his back as Dejesus stands over him. Miura stands and Dejesus just misses a head kick. Miura comes in swinging and Dejesus lands a counter shot that puts Miura out. Big strong right hook completely buckles his opponent and leaves him helpless. He follows up with a couple of shots and Big John stops the unnecessary punishment.

NOTE: Because Dejesus came in over weight, he will not get the title, but still an impressive win. If Miura would have won, he would have gotten the Tachi Palace featherweight title.

Ian McCall vs. Dustin Ortiz

Round 1 – Huge fight for Ortiz here. Ortiz pressing. Body kick. Leg kick from McCall. McCall lands a left and goes for the takedown. He puts Ortiz’s butt on the mat but Ortiz uses a kimura and gets right up. Ortiz checks a kick and McCall slips down. Right hand and big body kick from ORtiz. Leg kick from McCall. Left hook from McCall. McCall with a head kick and Ortiz eats it and walks through it. Ortiz still moving forward. Body kick. Clinch as McCall drops levels. Tries a foot sweep can’t get it. Ortiz presses as they separate. Body kick from Ortiz. Leg kick from McCall, another. Another. Ortiz shoots, McCalls prawls, stays up, lands a knee as Ortiz presses him against the cage. Elbow and knee from Ortiz. Knee from McCall. McCall presses into the cage, lands a couple elbows and dumps Ortiz. McCall mounts and gets his back as the bell sounds. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for McCall.

Round 2 – These guys are so fast. Ortiz blocks a head kick. Body kick from Ortiz. Right hand from McCall. Left hook from McCall. Leg kick from McCall and Ortiz throws one but it’s checked. Front kick from Ortiz. Body shot from McCall. Ortiz following McCall and eating quite a few counters. Leg kick from McCall. Ortiz goes for the takedown, McCall defends it. Leg kick from McCall. Right hook from Ortiz and counter from McCall. Right hook from McCall drops Ortiz. McCall jumps on him, takes his back. Ortiz covering up and McCall goes for the choke but Ortiz gets out. McCall has full mount, knee on belly and Ortiz gets to his feet as the bell sounds. Great grit from Ortiz but McCall got the round 10-9. Ortiz looks fine though.

Round 3 – Leg kick from McCall, again. Again. Body kick from McCall. Leg kick from McCall. Big one two from McCall. Leg kick from McCall. McCall kind of picking him apart now. McCall drops levels lands a few punches. Drops for a single, Ortiz defends. They square up. Front kick from Ortiz. Leg kick from Ortiz. McCall with two leg kicks that buckles Ortiz, more kicks. Punches, right hand, leg kick. Spinning back elbow from McCall connects. One two from McCall. McCall does more of the same until the round ends. Credit to Ortiz for keeping on the pressure but now he knows exactly where he stands and he’ll learn from this. Huge fight for both guys.
