Submission specialist Megumi Fujii had her 22-fight win streak snapped Thursday night in Hollywood, Fla., after she chose to stand and trade strikes with Taekwondo black belt Zoila Frausto at Bellator 34.

Uncharacteristically Fujii only tried taking the fight to the ground a couple of times during the 25-minute bout. In the final seconds of the fifth round Fujii finally go the fight to her domain, but by that time it was too late, Frausto locked her up in full guard and held as the final seconds ticked away.

Moments later Frausto was awarded the split decision victory (48-47, 47-48, 49-46) to become the very first Bellator 115-pound women’s champion.

Frausto fought her first pro bout in Feb. 2009 where she won a split decision over Karina Halliman. Since then she has put together an impressive 10-1 record, with her only loss coming via armbar submission in the second round to Miesha Tate at Strikeforce Challengers 7 in March of this year.

Fujii said after the bout that she was looking to beat Frausto at her own game. With 18 of her 22 wins coming by submission and only one TKO on her record, Fujii may have been better off sticking to what she does best for the championship bout.
