Brandon Cash (255.4) vs. John Devine (247.4)

FRESNO, Calif. — Strikeforce Challengers 11 takes  place this evening, Friday, Oct. 22, at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. In the main event, “Relentless” Roger Bowling will put his unbeaten record on the line once again against “Vicious” Bobby Voelker in a welterweight fight five months after their initial encounter which was stopped prematurely due to an accidental eye poke.

Also on the card, undefeated hometown fighter Billy Evangelista will entertain his Fresno family and friends as he faces Waachiim “Native Warrior” Spiritwolf in a 165-pound catch weight bout. And rising heavyweight star Lavar “Big” Johnson will attempt to add another victory to his six-knockouts-in-a-row win streak as he takes on 8-1 Virgil Zwicker.

Strikeforce Challengers 11 play-by-play:

Brandon Cash (5-3) vs. John Devine (6-4)

Round 1 – This is a heavyweight bout. Cash lands a overhand right then a leg kick. Devine grabs a single leg and gets the takedown. Cash gives up his back as he stands up. Devine has a body lock, landing punches from the back. Cash on three points to prevent the knee. Ref separates the stall and they square up again. Leg kick Cash. Left jab from Devine then a big leg kick from Cash. Devine takes his back again on a semi-takedown, they go all the way down. Cash looks for a kimura but Devine takes his back with hooks in, flattens him out and starts landing shots. Cash puts up NO defense as Devine locks in palm-to-palm rear-naked choke. He taps almost immediately. Terrible sub defense from Cash.

Julia Budd (1-0) vs. Shana Olsen (4-2)

Round 1 – Julia Budd makes her pro MMA debut in this 145 lb. bout. She actually has a Muay Thai win over Gina Carano a few years ago. Olsen shoots and puts Budd against the cage. Budd stops the takedown and reverses position against the cage. They separate, Budd with som jabs. Olsen with a leg kick. Big leg kick from Budd. Budd’s striking looking crisp and fast. Leg kick from Olsen. Olsen catches a kick, lets it go then clinches with a body lock, she goes for the takedown but Budd lands on top of her in half guard. Budd using elbows to the body. Budd locks on a guillotine from half guard, lets it go. Budd scoots Olsen away from the cage. Olsen almost sweeps her, Budd gets warned no elbows to the face. One minute left in the round. Budd is deducted a point for elbows to the face saying she was already warned. They exchange a few shots before the bell. I see that round a draw at 9-9 because of the point deduction.You can elbow while standing but not on the ground.

Round 2 – Olsen ties Budd up against the cage. Budd reverses position and seems to be stronger. Knees to the body from Budd. More knees from Budd, she backs up and throws and elbow and a combo of punches. Olsen clinches her up again and pusher her into the cage. Olsen pulls Budd on top of her and Budd gets full mount. Olsen turns to her side and Budd rains down punches while still mounted. Olsen spins back to her back and is flailing badly as she repeatedly gets hit. Awful arms flailing wildly defense from Olsen as Budd pounds out the victory.

Billy Evangelista (11-0, 1 NC) vs. Waachiim Spiritwolf (8-7-1)

Round 1 – This is a 165 lb. catch weight bout. Spiritwolf drops Evangelista with a big left hand. He dives into Evangelista’s guard and lands some shots as Evangelista gets to his feet. They clinch against the fence. Spiritwolf looking for the takedown and Evangelista looks for a keylock but can’t get it. Big slam by Spiritwolf. Evangelista gets back up but Spiritwolf hangs on and pushes him into the fence. Spiritwolf picks him up but sits him down. They exchange knees from the clinch. Spiritwolf takes some knees to the body and eats a uppercut. Knee to the dome by Evangelista. Spiritwolf with a big knee to the body. It’s a clinch war, knees by both fighters as it goes back and forth. 45 seconds left in the round. Spirit wolf swings, but eats a right hand and an elbow counter. Evangelista throws another big elbow that misses. Spiritwolf shoots for the double leg as the round ends. Great round. But I have to give it to Spiritwolf 10-9.

Round 2 – Spiritwolf pins him against the cage and gets the takedown. Evangelista gets the reversal and is on top inside guard. Spiritwolf works hard and gets to his feet. Clinch game with knees. They exchange strikes. Uppercut from Spiritwolf. Evangelista shoots under the punch, can’t get the takedown though and Spiritwolf drops levels and gets the double leg. Fast paced and exciting fight. Evangelista gets up and lands some knees but eats some uppercuts. Evangelista lands punches but Spirit wolf lands a big counter. They are both swinging for the fences. Big leg kick from Evangelista. Spiritwolf looks exhausted. Knees from the clinch by both fighters. Right hand by Evangelista, he’s picking Spiritwolf apart now, but not for long. Spiritwolf with two big leg kicks and shoots for the double leg, he gets him down briefly from a single leg but Evangelista pops up and lands a punch before the bell. Evangelista should get that round 10-9.

Round 3 – Evangelista’s conditioning may pay dividends here. Spiritwolf’s eyes are swollen. Both guys lands some big punches. Evangelista lands a big head kick right to the face but Spiritwolf catches it and then drops down for a single leg. Evangelista stuffs it and pushes him off. Punch and forward kick from Evangelista. Spiritwolf with a big leg kick, he’s wobbling. Evangelista picking him apart now with multiple punches and kicks. Spiritwolf’s heart and effort is amazing to behold. Straight left from Spiritwolf, again. Head kick to the face from Evangelista. Spiritwolf eats it and shoots for the legs. Evangelista  defends it well, lands a knee. they separate, and start swinging. Nice right from Spiritwolf but Evangelista fires back with big punches and a head kick. the crowd is on their feet as Spiritwolf lands a big punch, picks Evangelista up and slams him to the mat as the bell sounds. Spiritwolf is amazing folks!! Both guys are amazing!! I have to give that round to Spiritwolf because of how he ended that round 10-9 (Pride rules?). Rarely do you see someone push back with so much heart. He left it ALL in the cage… ALL.

Lavar Johnson (14-3) vs. Virgil Zwicker (8-1)

Round 1 – This is a heavyweight fight. Leg kick from Zwicker. they tie up, knees from both. Zwicker lands a couple punches and some leg kicks. Johnson fires back with punches but eats more leg kicks. Zwicker staying very active and moving with good footwork. Johnson lands a couple big punches but eats a couple in return. They tie up, Thai plum from Johnson and he lands some big knees. Johnson lands a nice straight left and throws a punch combo with very bad intentions and Virgil Zwicker is down and out and bleeding on the canvas. The replay shows a nice uppercut from Johnson, a couple of big jabs then a big right uppercut was the final blast.

NOTES: Seven straight KO wins by Johnson! Johnson is ready for the main Strikeforce show now and calls out some of the heavyweights in his post fight interview.

Roger Bowling (8-0) vs. Bobby Voelker (22-8)

Round 1 – This is a welterweight bout. An amazing stat here is all of Voelker’s 30 pro fights have taken place since 2006. Bowling’s pro career also started in 2007. Quite a comparison there. Have you guys seen Teach with Tony Danza? Bowling lands about three big leg kicks and is putting on the pressure. Voelker lands a leg kick. Bowling gets the double leg takedown but Voelker gets up and grabs a guillotine. Bowling takes him down but Voelker has that guillotine locked in with his legs locked around his waist. Bowling escapes it and is on top in half guard. Voelker gets up but eats a huge punch that wobbles Voelker. Head kick by Bowling. Voelker lands a punch and Bowling shoots but Voelker stops it. Bowling looks so strong and aggressive and athletic and fast. This guy is going to be a star. They clinch and exchange rabbit punches and knees. Bowling with an elbow as the separate but Voelker catches him with a couple punches, one to the back of the head. Bowling tries to get a takedown but can’t get it. Voelker gets underhooks and lands some nice knees to the body. Still a clinch war here against the cage. Bowling gets a trip takedown but Voelker gets right up. I give the round to Bowling 10-9.

Round 2 – They exchange some shots with both guys landing. Voelker with a body kick. Leg kick from Bowling. Bowling shoots, great sprawl from Voelker. He’s definitely slowed Bowling down. Leg kick from Voelker.  Then a nice uppercut. Nice straight left from Voelker and Bowling lands one in return. Bowling shoots, gets stuffed and Voelker lands some nice punches. Bowling is wobbling, he’s hurt,  his hands are down and Voelker keeps tagging him in the face. Bowling shoots out of desperation but Voelker stops it and puts Bowling on his back and is inside hsi full guard. Voelker with ground and pound. Bowling eating some big shots. Voelker is teeing off with hammerfists and lefts and rights. The ref warns him to defend himself and the ref finally stops it. Wow!! What a great performance from Voelker. Man… Bowling looked amazing for about one minute. Not sure what happened. Bowling strike defense needs some serious work.
