BOSTON – “UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2” takes place this evening at TD Garden in Boston, Mass. Headlining the event is a lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar (12-1), who will be defending his title in an immediate rematch against the legendary B.J. Penn (15-6-1), who lost his title to Edgar via unanimous decision in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112 in back in April. Has Penn passed the torch for good? Is he past his prime? Or is “The Prodigy” still the 155 lb. king of the world?

The fight getting all the attention on this card is the co-main event. For the very first time in history, a high level elite boxer is entering the Octagon. James “Lights Out” Toney (0-0 MMA, 72-6-3, 2 NC Boxing), without a single MMA bout under his belt, will step in the cage with one of the icons of the mixed martial arts game, UFC Hall of Famer Randy “The Natural” Couture (18-10).

In the early days of the UFC it was largely determined that a striker of any kind, without some type of grappling in his arsenal, would not stand a chance in a mixed martial arts fight. However, a fight is a fight, and it all comes down to style vs. style and who can  implement their game plan when its fight time. This is a historic night not only for the UFC, but for the sport of MMA  and for boxing too.

Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard

Round 1 – You do know that Gray “The Bully” Maynard looks just like the bully on the video game “Bully”. That has to be where his name came from. I loved that game too. Randy Couture vs. James Toney

Round 1 – I just want this fight to get over with I’ll be honest. I don’t want to watch this and I do at the same time. It’s a bit scary to be honest. Holy SH*T!!! I can’t believe this is even happening. Toney waiting. Randy takes him down and mounts. Randy starts pounding immediately. The crowd is going nuts. Randy throws a few little shots to the body but Randy is smothering him. People are chanting UFC. Randy postures up and lands a few punches. Randy pushes him up against the cage still in full mount. Randy has him in arm triangle position and Randy locks it in tight. Randy has the arm triangle in and Randy twists it tight. Toney taps out and never touched Randy a single time. That’s it baby. That should finish the question once and for all. Case F*CKING CLOSED.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Randy Couture def. James Toney by complete mutilation a.k.a. submission (arm triangle) Rd 1 (3:19)

NOTES: This was really an episode of “Bully Beatdown” on Pay-Per-View. Randy is fired up. Randy’s trainer awarded him his black belt (Not sure what his style is called as it’s a hybrid catch wrestling style). Toney said he didn’t expect him to be so aggressive at first. Toney said he will be back. Toney said his ground game is alright but he fought a great fighter. Sounds like he wants to stick around. At least he was classy in defeat. That was cool. Hell he made probably a cool million and maybe needed the money which may explain why he did this to start with. Either way. Glad that is over…. whew….

Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn

Round 1 – Edgar comes bouncing on his walk to the cage. He’s ready for this. Edgar looks fired up as he gets in the ring. B.J. has a solemn face, just standing there looking at Edgar. B.J. looks too calm, too emotional and in his mind. I think that is going to be his downfall whereas Frankie is more in his body right now, bouncing as his name is called. I picked Edgar to win (see Staff Picks). Here we go. Penn comes out after him and lands an uppercut as Edgar picks him up and slams him on his back. B.J. tries to sweep and go for an arm.  Edgar is free and in his full guard. B.J. has his feet on Frankie’s hips, like a frog. Frankie can’t pass because of that. Elbow from his back. Penn gets to his feet with no damage. Penn lands a solid left hand on the chin. Edgar lands a left. Edgar working his jab. Edgar clinches and BJ gives him a knee to the body. Edgar picks him up big and slams him. Edgar trying to mount but BJ gets up and eats a knee to the body on the way up. Penn looks too relaxed in my opinion. Leg kick then a punch from Edgar, another leg kick. He moves in and out before Penn can get to him. Penn with a left hook but Frankie follows up with a double jab. Left hook from Penn, body kick by Edgar. Gotta give the round to Edgar 10-9.

Round 2 – Head kick from BJ. Leg kick from BJ. BJ lands a couple shots as Edgar comes in. Nice body kick from Edgar. Edgar grabs a single lets it go and lands a knee. Leg kick Edgar. Edgar grabs a leg but eats a punch for it. Front kick Edgar. BJ lands a couple nice lefts. Left hand BJ. Edgar shoots, drives it in and puts BJ down. BJ has full guard. Gets right up and eats a shot. Edgar lands a nice left as he moves into the inside before BJ can do anything. He’s just so fast with two or three shots real quick before BJ knows what happens. Left hand Edgar. Leg kick Edgar. Bj lands a couple shots. BJ needs to get aggressive. Leg kick Edgar. BJ checks a kick. Edgar 10-9.

Round 3 – Edgar’s corner is telling him that BJ is fading. And they are right. BJ looks defeated (Rogan says concerned). Edgar shoots, BJ kicks him as he stuffs it. BJ lands a punch. Edgar with a kick punch combo. Left jab from Edgar scores. BJ with a left hand a knee. Leg kick checked by BJ. Edgar lands one. Edgar lands a right hand, a left jab, and then a nice uppercut. Big right hand by Edgar.  I picked Edgar by TKO and this is why. He lands another left and a leg kick. Edgar shoots, gets stuffed. Nice left from Edgar. Penn just looks lazy, he’s giving the fight away. Edgar shoots, puts him against the fence and lands a big elbow. Nice body shot by BJ. Nice left on the chin by Edgar. Edgar 10-9.

Round 4 – Penn’s corner sounds ridiculous. I think BJ is the number one guy in his camp and that’s the problem. BJ gets the takedown and gets full mount. Frankie has butterfly guard. But Edgar gets up and Penn pops him in the back of the head. Penn with a straight left but he eats a big right. Edgar drops Penn very hard with a leg sweep. Penn has full guard on Frankie. Penn using a high guard. Let’s it go and Edgar hits him in the body. Edgar postures up and dives in with an enormous right hand that lands on the button. That was a vicious shot. He lands a big elbow and BJ gets up. Huge left hook from Edgar that rocks Penn. Edgar lands a two punch combo on Penn’s face. Edgar has not slowed one bit and just continues to assault Penn with his hands and feet. Right hand by Penn before the bell. Edgar 10-9.

Round 5 – BJ’s corner says “Go get him”. Leg kick Frankie. BJ gets the takedown. Inside Edgar’s full guard. Frankie gets up but Penn drags him down. Penn tries to get his back but loses it and Edgar is on top inside Edgar’s guard. Big elbow from Edgar. Edgar puts his elbow in Penn’s throat lifts it up and hits him in the face, does it again only harder. Nice left hand from Edgar. He’s beating the crap out of BJ. I think we have seen BJ Penn get old before our eyes folks. Penn tries to scramble but Edgar puts him back down and smashes him with an elbow. Penn puts his back against the cage and gets up eating a knee to the body on the way up. One minute to go in the fight. Penn throws a lazy lazy knee and eats a punch. Penn moving so slow like he’s drunk. Edgar still attacking, landing punches and lands a knee to the face as Penn shoots. Leg kick Edgar. Edgar 10-9 and wins the fight in my book 50-45

OFFICIAL RESULT: Frankie Edgar def. B.J. Penn by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

  1. Both Diaz brothers continue to evolve. Love it. Felt sorry for Marcus though to lose at home like that… nighty night.

    Florian > Maynard

  2. I swear that style of Gray’s would piss me off so bad if I was fighting him. I would have to punch him after the fight.
