UFC on Versus 2: Jones vs. Matyushenko” takes place tonight, Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif. The event airs live on Versus starting at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. ProMMAnow.com will provide live results and play-by-play commentary.

The event is headlined by two highly respected light heavyweight fighters; one, a young much-hyped extremely athletic and gifted upstart by the name of Jon “Bones” Jones, the other is a seasoned veteran, 16 years older, much more experienced and as tough as they come. His nickname was given because he became known for wiping the floor with his opponents, “The Janitor” Vladimir Matyushenko.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Jake Ellenberger def. John Howard by TKO (doctor stoppage) Rd 3 (2:21)

NOTES: Chael Sonnen came on to talk about his fight next Saturday against middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Rogan asked Chael if he writes his material down. Professionally, Chael avoided the question and instead used the time to talk about what he was going to do to Silva. Isn’t it an absolute tragedy that the UFC does not have a champion in Silva that they can interview, that they can bring on like Sonnen, to help sell this fight? It’s horrible. Chael says he wants to defeat Silva and then he says Dana White is going to fire “The Spider”. Could it really happen? Would White fire him if he lost? He did threaten it after Silva’s last performance if he acted up again in the cage.

Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami

Round 2 – Right hand from Okami. One, two from Okami. Body kick from Munoz. Okami swings, Munoz ducks, shoots, Okami sprawls. Munoz backs out swings and misses, misses again. Okami swings, they clinch. They square up, Munoz drops Okami with a punch, but Okami shoots and gets the takedown. Munoz gets free and gets to his feet. Munoz attacks with punches, they square up and Munoz lands a nice right hand. Munoz shoots, Okami sprawls and appears to have recovered. Okami pushes Munoz’s head down to the ground. Munoz still holing on to Okami’s leg as Okami lands hammerfists and rabbit punches to his head. Munoz still working for the takedown, not giving up. Ten seconds left. OFFICIAL RESULT: Yushin Okami def. Mark Munoz by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko

NOTES: Rogan brings up a good point. Jones has had SO MUCH HYPE placed upon him, at 23-years-old it’s easy for that kind of thing to go to your head. So far, he has shown no signs of that. He’s fighting a veteran 16 years his elder tonight. NUTS. Here we go kids… I believe they just said Gene LeBell is a judge. Check out Gene on this week’s Inside MMA.

Round 1 – Jones is low in his stance. Vladdy swings big, misses. Huge leg kick from Jones. Spinning back pick to the gut from Bones, then a takedown. Vladdy on the bottom. Jones in half guard, moves to side control. Jones gets a mounted crucifix and lands a bunch of elbows until Herb Dean stops it. Herb tells him to fight back… it was a very quick stoppage. Vladdy doesn’t argue with the stoppage. The replay shows Vladdy was not defending well, although he did buck once. Maybe he could have got out of it eventually, who knows. Dana said it would be a year before Jones gets a title shot. He may have to start rethinking that if he gets another couple like this.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Jon Jones def. Vladimir Matyushenko by TKO (strikes) Rd 1 1:52

NOTES: Rogan asks Jones who he would like next and he said he’ll leave it up to Joe Silva. He wants someone tough…. he needs to fight a top five guy in my opinion.

  1. I don’t have Vs. so thanks for this. Jones is one of my favorite new fighters and I’ve always liked Gomi. I think he will get his first UFC win tonight.

  2. Griffin is the king of decisions and after hearing his gameplan tonight it sounds like another lameplan.

  3. Wow I was not expecting that out of Gomi! I was hoping he would experience a revival, but the odds were against it. Welcome back Fireball Kid! — My picks are going straight to hell already.

  4. how many fucking commercials are they going to show? They probably made more money on commercials than they would on a live gate.

  5. That’s awesome Richard! You’re right, but did it just happen in the Howard / Ellenberger fight? Maybe he’s showing favortism to Howard… that’s how it looked from where I’m sitting.
