Former WEC light heavyweight champion and decorated Marine Brian “All American” Stann will step back inside the Octagon on Aug. 1 as he makes his middleweight debut against Mike Massenzio at “UFC on Versus 2” in San Diego. No doubt, Stann will be prepared to battle and put on an exciting  fight as always.

As tough as the battles get inside the Octagon, it is still a sport, and can not compare to Stann’s former life as a United States Marine who fought in Iraq.

On one particular occasion during his deployment, for six days in May 2005, Stann’s platoon came under heavy fire when they were ambushed by insurgents. As a lieutenant in charge of 42 men, Stann was able to keep his soldiers safe, coordinate a response and eventually a rescue in which every single one of his men survived.

Stann has been awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third highest award for valor in combat. He has been featured on the History Channel and his actions were noted by President Bush in one of his speeches. Stann left active duty in 2008 as a captain and now makes his living as a professional mixed martial arts fighter in the UFC.

Next month Stann will be releasing his autobiography entitled “Heart for the Fight”, which is already drawing rave reviews from the media, including About.com (“One of the better sports biographies I’ve read in a long time”) and UFC.com (“By far the best fighter bio I’ve seen — both because Brian has actual stories to tell, and because the writer can really write“).

The book talks about his battles inside the cage as a professional athlete and his battles in Iraq during war time when he was fighting for America, the freedom of each and every one of us, and he and his men’s lives.

Brian Stann also currently runs a non-profit organization, Hire Heroes USA (www.hireheroesusa.org). This wonderful organization helps veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts find jobs upon transitioning out of the service.

Be on the lookout for “Heart of the Fight”, due to hit bookshelves mid-September, and stay tuned for our own ProMMAnow.com exclusive book review.
