UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (5-1) will step back in the Octagon at UFC 121 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Oct. 23 to defend his title against American Kickboxing Academy’s Cain Velasquez (8-0).

MMAFighting.com confirmed the bout with UFC President Dana White on Friday.

Lesnar is coming off his second title defense at UFC 116 on July 3 against Shane Carwin. In deep trouble during the first round, Lesnar weathered the storm and bounced back in round two with an arm triangle submission win over the spent Carwin.

Considered by most experts as the number one heavyweight in the world, Lesnar will be put to the test once again as he faces Velasquez, a high caliber wrestler with very dangerous boxing, and still undefeated in his MMA career.

Velasquez is 6-0 inside the Octagon. He knocked out each of his opponents aside from Cheick Kongo, whom he defeated by unanimous decision.

Velasquez’s most recent victim was Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, a fighter known as nearly impossible to stop, yet Velasquez finished him just two minutes into the first round.

While Lesnar will have a size advantage, he will likely not have the wrestling advantage he has carried into all of his previous bouts. Some feel Velasquez may even be the better wrestler.

Also, Velasquez is going to have the advantage with his boxing. One other thing is certain, Velasquez will not be spent after the first round like Lesnar’s last opponent. In fact, Velasquez is known as one of the best conditioned athletes in the sport.

  1. I predicted Carwin will knock brock out in 2:58 of the first round which by all indication the fight should have been stopped even before that time. But bygones should be bygones. The most important thing is whatever was cramping Carwins’ legs that literally restricted his movement and had to be rushed to the ER turned out not to be too seriouse. For the first time the world found out not only brock is can be beaten but the total force and brute power of Carwin prooved to be just too much for anyone that step in the ring with him. I know Carwin is going to be on his way back to claim the heavy weight title in a few months. To me he’s the most feared heavy weight fighter in the world right now and if you don’t believe me ask brock about the beaten he took on that night. Lesnar was very pleased that Carwin had the wind knocked out of him from whatever was going on in his legs and lesnar took great advantage of that.
As for Cain, I’ve only watched one fight of his which he totaly dominated his opponent on the ground. I am not sure he can do that with a big guy like lesnar, but what I don know is he’s got incredible cardio which lacks on lesnars’ side. From what I’ve seen if cain can sustain brocks’ initial storm it is going to be a long night for brock
