Brian Imes at the Bellator tryouts

It has been an interesting couple of weeks. Bellator Fighting Championships just had their show Thursday night at the Kansas City Power & Light District. Over three thousand people showed up to watch eight fights in the beautiful outdoor setting.

Four of the fights were a part of the middleweight tournament while the other four served as qualifiers for next year’s tourneys. Five Kansas City fighters got their chance to shine in front of the home town crowd.

Pat Miletich was on hand to corner his MFS Elite product and IFL veteran, Ryan McGivern. Joe “Daddy” Stevenson made the trip from Las Vegas as well.

It was the best MMA event Kansas City has seen to date and Bellator will be back three more times this year alone.

I tried out for this promotion a couple months back. I did not make the cut this time around, but The Cordish Group asked me to help with the promotion side of the event.

It was a great experience and I believe a great success for their first sporting event. I even did three radio interviews over the past two weeks. I was on with Soren Petro on 810 Sports Zone for a great 45-minute chat ending in a gogoplata demonstration.

My guinea pig was long time Kansas City sports personality, Frank Boal. Frank seemed shy afterwards, but Soren got a great laugh out of the deal. I hope to get another opportunity to talk MMA with him again.  Of course it was a lot of fun with plenty of free press for this young fighter, but I would much rather have been fighting.

The night of the fights I played pitchman for my apparel company, Hillbilly Fight Wear. My sister, who is an investor in the company, was on hand to make the sales along with my girlfriend, Carrie.

We later played host for the after party at PBR Big Sky. PBR is where I tend bar on the weekends when I am not fighting or traveling with training partners. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere was electric.

The big winner was the MMA  community. Bellator put on a classy show with Sam Caplan’s match-ups. If you didn’t make it down you could have caught it on live Fox Sports Net.

Bellator will be back to the Kansas City Power & Light District in June. I hope to be invited to compete, but if not, I’m sure I’ll be involved again somehow.

Until then I’ll be training at our new gym, Kansas City Premier Martial Arts and Fitness on Vivion Road in North Kansas City. Owner, Eric Siley, along with myself and Ethan Benda will offer a diverse teaching and training environment.

I am so happy to be involved in this new project and I know that Eric will make the gym a great success for the martial arts community as a whole.

Special congratulations to Danny Tims and Eric Marriott for their victories Thursday night in their hometown. Good luck in next season’s tournament fellas!
