Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed al-Nahayan

According to an MSNBC report, Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed al-Nahayan, 41, has died in a glider crash in Morocco. He was the younger brother of the ruler of Abu Dhabi, who is also president of the United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Ahmed was the managing director of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, estimated to be worth between $500 billion and $800 billion. He was ranked No. 27 on the 2009 Forbes list of world’s most powerful people.

Flash Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi, purchased a ten percent stake in the UFC last year, and the country’s first ever pro MMA event is planned for next month.

“UFC 112: Invincible” is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on April 10, and many of the participants in that event are already in the country. How or if Sheikh Ahmed’s death will affect the event is not yet known.
