FRESNO, Calif. – Some of the top up-and-comers in the world of professional mixed martial arts gather tonight at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., to test their skills against one another at “Strikeforce Challengers 7”. The event will air live on Showtime beginning at 11:45pm ET. ProMMAnow.com will provide live results and play-by-play commentary during tonight’s event.

Shamar Bailey vs. Justin Wilcox

Round 1 – Wilcox throws the first strikes, tags Bailey with a right head kick, now pushing forward with punches, the ref falls to his back and the fighters look on in disbelief. Everyone laughs. Ref is okay and gets up. Bailey is cut and he keeps wiping it off under his eye. Another head kick scores for Wilcox, and partially lands another. Bailey fires one of his own but misses. Wilcox scores with a right hand. Bailey keeps wiping his cut and finally the ref calls time out. The ref asked him if he wants to continue, he says yes. Wilcox pressing in with kicks and strikes again. Another high kick by Wilcox smacks loudly. Leg kick by Wilcox scores. Wilcox gets a single leg but Bailey survives it with great balance on one leg. Bailey cut 30 lbs. for this fight. Bailey shoots in, very telegraphed, Wilcox sprawls, lands some punches at the bell. Props to Bailey for surviving that hard head kick. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 for Wilcox.

Round 2 – Wilcox scores with a right. Wilcox with a head kick then a flurry of strikes. Bailey complains about a poke but the ref doesn’t stop it. Wilcox takes a poke in the eye from Bailey and the ref gives him time to recover. Bailey can’t seem to find his range with punches. Even though Bailey has the longer reach, Wilcox is winning the stand up game so far. Kick to the groin from Wilcox and Bailey drops to his knees. The ref gives him time to recover. Big head kick again lands for Wilcox. How Bailey takes those I have no idea. Bailey cannot seem to land a punch. Overhand right scores for Wilcox. Bailey holds his eye like he got poked again, he covers up, ref doesn’t stop it and Wilcox lands several punches and takes Bailey down. He’s hurt, but the bell sounds. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 for Wilcox.

Round 3 – Wilcox has dominated so far. Bailey hasn’t landed a good solid punch yet that I recall. Wilcox lands several punches, then a nice left. Bailey fires off some punches but Wilcox dips and slides around them. Wilcox lands a counter right and a nice left. Uppercut scores for Bailey. Bailey lands a right hook. Wilcox ducks a punch and puts Bailey on his back. Wilcox gets full mount and Bailey hangs on tight. Wilcox continues to work over Bailey from the mount and Bailey is just hanging on at this point. 30 seconds left. Wilcox goes for an armbar but loses it. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Justin Wilcox.

Miesha Tate vs. Zoila Frausto

Round 1 – Miesha with a leg kick. Zoila swings big but misses. Miesha shoots, locks up the clinch. Knee to the body. Miesha grabs a single and takes her down, has side control in the center of the cage. Miesha lands a couple shots. Zoila with the up kick that misses and Miesha goes back to side control. Miesha gets mount then has Frausto’s back, Frausto goes out the back door and back to her feet. Tate lands a straight left then clinches up Frausto. Tate tries to trip her but Frausto defends well. Tate finally drags her to the mat, landing in side control. Frausto locks up Tate’s head briefly before the bell sounds. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 for Tate.

Round 2 – Leg kick by Frausto. And another. Nice left hand by Tate and Frausto pops her with a right hand. Push kick by Frausto knocks Tate backward. Tate clinches up, grabs a single leg and puts Fraust back to the mat. Tate has side control, and has Frausto in a choke. Frausto is in trouble. Frausto finally gets out of it. Miesha moves to full mount and starts with the ground and pound. Tate goes for an armbar. Frausto is fighting it hard, and Tate gets it. Frausto taps out and loses her first MMA fight. Great fun fight.

Andre Galvao vs. Luke Stewart

Round 1 – Two great BJJ guys. Galvao shoots, gets the takedown. Galvao pounds the ribs. Stewart locks on full guard. Galvao stands up and throws a couple of bombs. Stewart goes for an omoplata, then goes to a leg lock, Galvao goes for a foot lock. It’s a high level chess match at this point. Both are back to their feet after a great scramble. Knees to the body by Galvao. Galvao changes levels, grabs a single leg, pinning him against the cage, then goes for the takedown. Stewart is free and scores with a couple of kicks. Stewart takes Galvao down but he bounces right up. Stewart pressing him against the cage. Foot stomps by Stewart. Knee to the liver by Galvao as the round ends. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 for Galvao.

Round 2 – Leg kick by Stewart, left hand by Galvao lands. The clinch up, Stewart pins Galvao against the cage. Galvao spins away and gets free. Stewart lands a leg kick. Nice right hand by Galvao. Stewart lands a right then a head kick. Knee to the body by Galvao and Stewart slips to the mat. Stewart gets to his feet, gets a body lock. Galvao lands a knee to the body. Stewart with a big body kick. Inside leg kick, then a combo of punches. Leg kick by Stewart. Galvao gets a takedown and is on top in half guard. Elbows to the thigh by Galvao. Galvao trying to get mount, moves to side control, Stewart reverses with a sweep and is in Galvao’s guard. ProMMAnow scores that round 10-9 for Stewart.

Round 3 – Leg kick by Stewart, then a push kick. They clinch up. Galvao gets a trip takedown. Stewart has full guard. Galvao lands a big right to the chin while postured up. Galvao gets side control after a scramble. Stewart reverses, gets side control. Very impressive. Right hand scores by Stewart. Galvao stands, grabs a Thai clinch. Stewart grabs a single leg. Galvao lands a knee to the head with his other leg. It’s a knee fight as both guys attack. Stewart sweeps again, they stand, Stewart has Galvao clinched. Body kick caught by Galvao, he pushes Stewart against the cage. They clinch. Bell sounds. Great great technical fight. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 and the fight 29-28 for Luke Stewart.

This fight just went into nomination for “Robbery of the Year” as far as I’m concerned. Bullshit decision. Absolutely bullshit.

Ron “Abongo” Humphrey vs. George Bush

Round 1 –  Abongo has moved down to light heavyweight and looks like a beast. Head kick by Abongo is blocked. Bush lands a couple of leg kicks. Abongo throws a head kick and Bush puts him right on his back. Leg kicks with Bush. Mark Coleman in Bush’s corner yelling instruction. Bush shoots. Abongo locks on an arm in guillotine and Bush taps out quickly. It is Abongo’s first submission win.

Lavar Johnson vs. Lolohea Mahe

Round 1 – Lavar gets all the applause as the hometown fighter. Lavar throwing a nice left jab. Big right by Mahe. Left jab by Lavar doubles it up. Eye poke to Lavar. Time out for a moment. Big leg kicks by Lavar. Both guys swinging big. Mahe shoots in, presses Lavar against the fence. Lavar looking for a possible guillotine. Knee to the body by Lavar. Mahe going for the choke. Mahe gets free by pulling on Lavar’s wrists. Mahe still looking for the takedown and gets it finally. Lavar has butterfly guard and Mahe is attacking from the top with body shots. Mahe moves to side control. Johnson trying to scramble but Mahe is still in control. Johnson gets wrist control and gets to his feet. Both fighters swing and miss. Mahe gets a takedown. ProMMAnow scores the round 10-9 for Mahe.

Round 2 – One two by Lavar and Mahe fires back and scores. Johnson scores with a shot to the chin. Mahe shoots, presses Lavar against the cage. Lavar gets free, lands some leg kicks. Mahe looks tired. Lavar lands some big punches. Mahe looks mad and fires back. Johnson lands some jabs, Mahe fires back. Body shot by Johnson, tags Mahe in the chin. Lavar also looking spent. It’s turned into a Bonnar-Griffin-esque type war. Big right by Johnson rocks Mahe but he’s still there. Johnson keeps firing away, Mahe won’t go away, he fires back. Johnson makes him drop to a knee with a punch and the ref steps in. Mahe is on his hands and knees and the blood pours from his nose. Beautiful war and one of the best fights so far this year. This was Mahe’s first loss.

  1. Mahe had so much heart. From six years in prison to going 6-0 as a pro is awesome. He was so tough. But Lavar “Big” Johnson proved just how big his cojones are and took it to him. That was off the damn chain.
