This past weekend Cole Konrad moved to 2-0 in MMA by knocking out Joel Wyatt in only 2:33 into round 1 at Matrix Fights 1. After the victory news broke that the former two-time NCAA champion had signed with Bellator Fighting Championships. A lot of people may not be familiar with Konrad’s wrestling past, so ProMMANow.com gives you the chance to sit down and breakdown some footage.

In addition to his two NCAA titles he also won a bronze medal at 2006 World University Championships and a 2005 Pan American Championship. During his college career he defeated 2008 Olympian Steve Mocco and current UFC heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez.

As you can see from the video, Konrad is a physically powerful wrestler. He may not have the leg attacks of Brock Lesnar, but he can score from the position when he needs to. The end of the match highlights one of his biggest skills. He has exceptional takedowns from the clinch position, and we have seen how that will help in MMA. Of course, the biggest question about Konrad is can he pick up the striking and the grappling game. Only time will tell, but it is good to see high level wrestlers filling in the rank of the once desolate heavyweight division.
