Recent Bellator Fighting Championships signee Ben Askren finished second at last weekend’s Cerro Pelado International in Cuba in the 74 kg division. In the semifinals he avenged his Olympic defeat against Ivan Fundora. Then in the championship match Trent Paulson defeated Askren in a rematch of the Dave Schultz final two weeks ago.

In the 2008 games Askren was knocked out of the tournament by Fundora. The Cuban wrestler defeated the two-time NCAA champion by the score 1-3, 0-4. On Saturday, Askren returned the favor winning in two periods 3-1, 2-2.

In the Dave Schultz final Asken dropped the first period to Paulson, but came back in the second and won by fall. This past weekend Paulson pitched a shutout and won 4-0, 3-0.

Askren will take part in Bellator’s season-two welterweight tournament, which begins in April. So far in MMA he is 3-0 with three first-round stoppages. Possible tournament opponents include Dan Hornbuckle, Jacob McClintock and Jim Wallhead.

Also at the tournament Team Thirsty member Shawn Bunch earned a bronze medal in the 60 kg division. Check out TheMat.com for full results.
