The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) issued a nine month suspension to World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight Cole Province (6-1) on Friday after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Methasterone.

The 28-year-old Province defeated Fredson Paixo (8-4) via unanimous decision at “WEC 42: Torres vs. Bowles” on Aug. 9. He was required to take a drug test following the victory. His win over Paixo has been officially changed to a “no contest” by the commission, and he has also been fined $4,000.

Province admitted to taking the substance but claimed he had no idea it was illegal. “I’m by no means claiming I’m innocent and didn’t have it in my system. It’s my fault. I knew it helped build muscle,” Province said.

A decorated wrestling champion from University of Central Oklahoma, Province lost in his WEC debut in Dec. 2008 to Diego Nunes (13-0). The win over Paixo would have been a nice way to bounce back and get his first win in the big show. Unfortunately, now it is back to the drawing board.
