On Sat., Aug. 15, the most anticipated fight in female MMA history took place live on Showtime between Gina Carano and Cris “Cyborg” Santos for the Strikeforce women’s 145 lbs. title. The card also boasted two other high profile title fights with Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida and Gegard Mousasi vs. Renato Sobral.

Never one to be outdone, especially since Strikeforce just finished signing Fedor Emelianenko, the UFC unleashed the big guns, and aired a replay of “UFC 100: Lesnar vs. Mir 2” (originally aired July 11 on pay-per-view) free on Spike TV to counter-program Showtime’s “Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg.”

It was a replay of UFC 100 in the red corner vs. Strikeforce in the blue corner.  Who do you think won?

According to a press release issued by the UFC on Tuesday, Spike TV’s replay of UFC 100 drew 513,000 male viewers between the ages of 18-34 , and Strikeforce’s Showtime event drew 181,000 viewers in the same highly sought demographic.

Not only did Spike TV’s replay of UFC 100 defeat Strikeforce, but according to the same report, they also drew more men 18-34 than the PGA Championship on CBS (479,000) and major league baseball on Fox (242,000).

In fact, Spike TV’s telecast of UFC 100 drew more men 18-34 (513,000) than anything else on television on Sat., Aug. 15. Airing from 10:00pm-12:30am ET/PT, the telecast drew 2 million viewers, a 1.8 rating in men 18-34, a 1.7 rating (950,000) in men 18-49, and a 1.5 household rating.

  1. i wish it was possible to get strikeforce events for a reasonable price in canada. i wouldn’t mind paying a reasonable fee either like 10 or 15 bucks, but 50 dollars per pay per view is absolute insanity.

for a value comparison you can get directv with over 250 channels for nearly the same price, WITH showtime AND HBO for 60 bucks.

i dont know what the marketing department over at strikeforce is smoking, but i want some.

50 dollars!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!!?? even scott coker would buy a UFC PPV event before a strikeforce PPV at that price.
