Knee bar? Early in the first round of my bout with Aron Lofton on Saturday night I found myself semi-comfortably holding half guard from my right hip. My left knee was up to block his right shoulder from dropping shots to my nugget.

The crowd, comprised of 1,497 screaming “Poster Boy” fans, was poised to see their hero inflict damage. I had actually envisioned the fight this way before hand. I rather enjoy a good beating and it helps get me going. But instead of plastering my face with leather, he did what I and most of the crowd least expected him to.

Crafty little devil! You always hear MMA compared to chess. It only looks like chess to the observers. You see, the men involved in the battle are the pieces, and we can’t always foresee or feel the next attack. Apparently, this is what separates the elite from the aspiring.

Aron Lofton is a self-promoting genius. From the mohawk to the tattoos to the toe-nail polish he is a walking billboard of himself. At the bell, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to punch him or kiss him. We were in his house with his people, and when it was all over, it was him kissing me. Disrespect? Not at all. Aron Lofton is a showman and a good one. He beat me where I least expected him to and that’s what makes him a great fighter.

Battle is the greatest venue for learning. No better place in life for a man to find out who he is but in a cage with another willing and wild animal. I got beat on Saturday night, but you can bet your ass that I was taking notes.

What a great opportunity to improve my game by taking on a high-caliber opponent. The promoter told me I was “game.” I’m probably somewhere between “game” and “stupid,” but I’m not afraid to test myself, because with the greatest risk comes the greatest reward. Sooner or later I’m going to shock the hell out of everyone. Until that day, I’m just another grateful participant in the world’s finest sport. I am a fighter!
