PRO MMA (promma.info) has learned from bjpenn.com that UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn (13-5-1) will meet Kenny Florian (11-3) in a much anticipated lightweight title fight at UFC 101, most likely in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Penn is coming off a loss to Georges St.Pierre at UFC 94, however that fight was at welterweight not Penn’s normal lightweight class. His last lightweight fight was a successful defense against Sean Sherk at UFC 84 back in May of 2008.

Florian has been waiting patiently for his opportunity at a second title shot he earned by reeling off six straight wins including victories over Joe Stevenson and Roger Huerta.

Penn was the first ever American-born winner of the World Jiu Jitsu Championships in the black belt division. On top of his world renown grappling skills, he is also recognized for having a high caliber boxing game.

Florian is also a black belt in jiu jitsu and has won numerous grappling titles and medals. He has also added a highly impressive striking arsenal to his repertoire while training under Mark Dellagrate at the Sityodtong USA Academy in Boston.

It is interesting to note that Penn has only lost one lightweight fight in his career and that was to Jens Pulver way back at UFC 35 in 2002. His other losses have come in the heavier weight classes.

UFC 101 is to take place August 8th most likely in Philadelphia, although it has not been officially announced.

  1. “I have some exciting news to share with you. Accordingly, I am happy to announce that I will be fighting BJ Penn on August 8th in Philadelphia, PA at UFC 101 for the UFC Lightweight title. I signed the fight contract over the weekend. ” from KennyFlorian.com press release.

Florian has signed so it is now official! I think that Florian has a better chance than most give him credit for. In no way will BJ Penn ‘walk through’ K-Flo. This may well end up being a great 5 round war.
