Ralph Gracie black belt, Alan “Gumby” Marques, opened up the doors to his new school, HEROES Martial Arts in downtown San Jose, CA.

Located on 460 South Market Street with easy access to and from Highway 280, HEROES will feature Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling and Judo classes inside the 4700 square foot gym.

Led by On the Mat co-founder, Marques, HEROES staff boasts San Jose State Judo coach and team captain, Chuck Jefferson as well as Iowa and Indiana wrestling coach, Scott Belzer.

The moment you walk into the gym the staff create a welcoming environment. At today’s grand opening, “Gumby” met everyone at the door and held demonstrations for visiting patrons. The gym’s family friendly atmosphere translated over to the 1500 square foot mat where a dozen children rolled around with their parents.

The gym holds classes seven days a week. HEROES offers instruction for children ages six to twelve, thirteen to eightteen and competition classes for students hoping to compete in BJJ tournaments. While most gyms boast about checking egos at the door, Marques’s academy makes aspiring students of all ages feel at home.
