Judo gold medalist Ishii offered $5 million by DREAM

Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii will be tranistioning into the world of Mixed Martial Arts according to various reports.

Ishii, who won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in the men’s over 100-kilogram event follows in the footsteps of Hidehiko Yoshida and Makoto Takimoto as Japanese judo competitors to switch to professional MMA.

According to our friends over at Ishi has been offered a whopping $5 million to sign with Japanese MMA promotion, DREAM, making him the most sought after fighter in Japan if not the world.

UFC: Sport or Entertainment?

I woke up today a bit confused. After watching a recent video interview with Randy Couture where he says that no one is pretending Brock Lesnar is the number one contender for the UFC Heavyweight Title, but rather it is “about the eyeballs,” it just got me to thinking.

Is the top MMA promotion in the world a sports league? I find myself telling people “MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world” and often I point to the UFC as proof of that. They are being covered by ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and innumerable sports news affiliates around the world. So I know I’m not crazy when I consider what the UFC does a sport.

After the obligatory past week’s fight re-cap, multiple fighters voice their opinion that they really respect Roli after his performance vs. Junie Browning. This is a far cry from the way most felt about him prior to the bout, with most feeling he was the weakest on the group at 155.

Coach Mir is in the locker room following the fight between Rolando and Junie and he lets Junie know just what he thinks about his poor cardio and lackluster performance. He tells Junie that the hype has been tarnished saying, “You showed some chinks in your armor, so you know what, the next guy’s not going to be afraid.”

Mike Whitehead wins at Kansas City M-1 Challenge – Full Results

Kansas City M-1 Challenge took place last night at Harrah’s Casino. The M-1 Challenge is an international team competition for young talented upcoming fighters to gain experience and be given the opportunity to fight internationally. The most talented may be selected to participate in the major M-1 events. Teams consist of 5 members (one in each weight division being -70 kg, -76 kg, -84 kg, -93 kg and +93 kg and a coach.

Every region/country will bring forward a team that will compete against other teams in an international competition that will last throughout 2008 with a grand finale at the end of the year. There will be two poules of five teams to start with. In each poule the teams will fight every other team. The winners of the poules will then fight for the M-1 Championship.The teams in poule A are: Holland, Japan, Russian Legion, Spain and the World team. In poule B are: Finland, France, Korea, Red Devil and the USA.

UFC steps into next-gen with Blu-Ray

On November 18th the UFC in cooperation with First Look Studios will officially step into the next generation by releasing “Ultimate Comebacks”, the first UFC title on Blu-ray Disc.

Pete Sell vs. Scott Smith and Martin Kampmann vs. Drew McFedries are just two of the bouts named to be on this high-definition release.

More than four hours of hardcore Ultimate Fighting footage, much of it never before seen on TV is said to be on the “Ultimate Comebacks” Blu-ray disc. Behind-the-scenes interviews will also be included.

California Xtreme Fighting (“CXF”) returns on Thursday, October 30, 2008 with the kick off of its new Thursday Night Fight Series. CXF will hold its third professional Mixed Martial Arts Card at a new venue, the El Monte Expo Center and Guanatos Bar in El Monte, CA.

This new venue will allow CXF to bring its exciting MMA cards to a larger audience in a bigger and better venue for fighting. Each month, CXF will bring fight fans a different style of fighting, including MMA, Boxing, and Muay Thai/Kickboxing, making CXF the only full scale fighting organization of its kind in the state of California.

In November, CXF is proud to feature the return of former EliteXC Lightweight Champion Karl “KJ” Noons to the boxing ring in a six (6) round 155 lb fight against Ontario’s Alex Bogarin. Noons will also be appearing at the October 30, 2008 MMA card as a special guest.
