As most of you already know former UFC MW champion Evan Tanner was found dead.  While Tanner often did many things that I myself would never do, in many ways we did share similarities.  He wasn’t a quitter and the way he persevered during some of his fights is similar to some of the things I’ve endured growing up.  Not to mention the way he learned BJJ from VHS tapes, just as I learned in a similar fashion from watching actual fights over and over and over.  He was his own person and didn’t ask for or take hand outs, just like me as the only Native American baseball player on every team I was on.

During the last couple of years from reading his journal posts you got a sense that Evan was searching for something, yet I’m not quite sure he even knew what it was.  However, he lived as he wished..and when you really think about it…that’s all you can ask for.  As a MMA fan, I’m thankful to have watched him perform.
